Deckchair Cinema, operated by the Darwin Film Society, is a unique cinema experience. It is fully independent and screens films that are often otherwise unavailable to local audiences.

The outdoor setting, on the edge of Darwin Harbour is absolutely stunning. Watch the sunset over the sea and enjoy the tropical garden setting with a meal and a drink before the film.

Deckchair Cinema runs seven nights a week during the dry season screening a range of movies that include family favourites, Australian and foreign films. Our licensed kiosk sells wine, beer, soft drinks and snacks as well as a range of Deckchair merchandise. Hot food is available on site every night. You are welcome to bring your own picnic, but strictly NO BYO alcohol. The box office and kiosk open at 6.30pm every night allowing plenty of time to enjoy the atmosphere. Deckchair Cinema is a non-smoking venue.

The ambience is very laid back and relaxed. There are 250 deckchairs as well as about 150 straight-backed seats. We do supply some cushions, but recommend that people bring their own for extra comfort. During the months we operate the Deckchair Cinema (April to November) skies are usually cloud-free and the stars make a great backdrop for the screen. On the odd occasion that it does rain – we will still show the programmed film (unless its pouring).

Deckchair Cinema is accessible via the Damoe Ra Walkway from the Esplanade. This path is well lit before and after each screening. The cinema is also accessible by road from the end of Kitchener Drive, in the Waterfront Precinct. Parking at the Deckchair is free after 6pm.

No bookings available. Tickets can be purchased on the night of the film from 6.30pm at the Deckchair box office. Cash, eftpos and credit card facility available.
